You can be a zealot in your belief through learning the words of gods by
heart but there is still something missing if you lack true fanaticism.
Utter blind devotion is not something you learn from the books and other
people. It comes from your actions and can only be learned when you put
your religion in practice. Acts such as preaching and flagellation for
example are great way to beat some fanaticism into yourself.

Fanaticism affects the spell damage of most guild spells and increases amount of natural armor gained from flagellantion.
