Each piece of wood will have different properties for bending strength, tensile strength, compression strength, color, rot resistance, density, grain pattern, difficulty to carve or cut, and a dozen other properties. With knowledge of wood a carpenter learns to not only select appropriate pieces of wood, but also to work them in appropriate ways to make a sturdy and visually appealing product.
