What this guild is about
Learn another way to be alive.
The Gaesati worship Walmor, the ever-changing, and learn to reshape their bodies into animals and even trees. Each kindred is a way of fighting and understanding another living form. Transformation, form-specific magic and cooperation between matching forms make the guild about inhabiting strength rather than simply carrying it.
The Gaesati ask what it means to become something else without surrendering the purpose that brought you there. Their power is learned devotion to Walmor, not a werecreature’s affliction. A kindred teaches more than an outline: the shapeshifter studies how that being moves, fights and lives. Bears, wolves and trees therefore represent different relationships with a battle, not a collection of costumes. Even the solitary practice of transformation has a communal answer in pack tactics. When shapeshifters share a form and understand one another’s movements, their common knowledge can become an attack that needs no spoken instruction.
You might feel at home here if…
- You want your chosen form to define how combat feels.
- You enjoy preparing natural weapons and adapting to a body’s strengths.
- You like the possibility of coordinated attacks with matching shapeshifters.

Lore & origins
The people of the ever-changing
The first distinction matters: Gaesati are ordinary people who worship Walmor, the ever-changing. They are not werecreatures. Their guild introduction describes years of solitary practice in the woods before transformations into animals, and even trees, become possible. The art is both bodily and sacred. To bend a mortal shape is to imitate the god they follow, and the skill’s own teaching describes it as the central practice of the guild. What appears sudden to an observer rests on a long apprenticeship.
Their gathering place is a serene forest glade beside a freshwater lake. Standing stones carry runes and pictures of animals, and the quiet has a sense of hidden power. Other sacred glades hold totems of the beings honoured by particular kindreds. Young Gaesati learn to imitate those beings and eventually fight and live in their shapes. The changing titles within a kindred move through helping, friendship and understanding before mastery, making the relationship feel like something cultivated rather than a creature simply conquered.
The path does not promise an easy harmony. The master shapeshifters’ glade is dedicated to Walmor, and its teaching remembers those who lost themselves to rage or died before reaching mastery. Tales say great masters can surpass the animals whose forms they assume, but those stories sit at the far end of difficult training. Against that danger stands the kindreds’ shared lesson: one creature can become strong, yet coordinated creatures can do more. Even the kindred of trees apply this principle, extending cooperation beyond the familiar image of a hunting pack.

A place in the world
The lakeside glades of Walmor
Animal-carved standing stones surround the main glade beside a quiet lake. Separate kindred glades honour different forms, and a further clearing is dedicated to master shapeshifters. The guild’s fang necklace provides a human-scale sign of belonging before any transformation makes that allegiance visible in battle.
Explore the world around themTheir role in a fight
Wear the strength the fight needs.
A Gaesati brings the body of a chosen form into close combat. Bear training emphasises powerful assault and critical potential; wolf training includes continuous assault, tracking and reflexes; tree training adds a different kind of endurance. Form-specific spells can reinforce these choices. Your role follows the forms and supporting abilities you have actually developed, rather than a universal transformation that solves every encounter.

With a party
The distinctive party opportunity is fighting alongside other Gaesati in the same form. Pack Tactics draws on shared movement and instinct to create coordinated attacks. This gives party composition a tangible meaning: two shapeshifters can deliberately agree on a form that both know well. Ordinary companions still benefit from your melee presence, while a matching kindred adds a specialised cooperative layer.
On your own
Solo play centres on learning what your chosen body can do and preparing it for the opponent. Spectral Claws offers an elemental choice for compatible animal forms, while a tree can strengthen its bark with Grow Roots. The satisfaction comes from developing a recognisable fighting identity through transformation, then understanding its limits well enough to decide when to press on or withdraw.
The choices you make
Forms and their supporting magic have conditions. Spectral Claws is available to particular clawed forms; Grow Roots requires a tree form and increases the endurance cost of moving through wooded or hilly ground. Pack Tactics needs matching shapeshifters. The guild rewards mastery of its specific bodies and circumstances, and transformation should not be mistaken for unrestricted access to every animal ability.

Signature abilities
Shapeshifting and kindreds
Choose the body that fights
Use the guild’s assume command to take a learned form. General shapeshifting knowledge supports the art, while knowledge of an individual form governs how convincingly and effectively you become it. Kindred training develops the fighting habits associated with that body, making form expertise as important as the initial ability to change shape.
Pack Tactics
Instinctive cooperation
Coordinate with other shapeshifters in the same form, using an understanding of one another’s movements to attack together. The idea is shared animal instinct made into a trained technique. It rewards planning with other Gaesati and knowing the available tactics, rather than assuming that simply standing near any animal or companion provides the same effect.
Spectral Claws
Elemental natural weapons
Surround claws with a magical field and choose fire, cold, lightning or acid. Bear, wolf, bird and cat shapeshifters can use this spell. Recasting renews its duration, and choosing another element changes the damage type. It gives compatible forms a practical way to prepare their natural weapons for different opponents.
Grow Roots
Endurance in tree form
Extend a tree form’s roots into the soil to strengthen its toughness and thicken its protective bark. The roots do not immobilise the shapeshifter, but dragging them through wooded and hilly terrain costs additional endurance. You can end the effect voluntarily, making protection and travel efficiency a deliberate choice.
These are examples from the guild’s wider training. Availability and strength depend on your guild path, skills and current game rules; an initiate starts with a smaller repertoire.
Learning the tradition
Find your kindred.
The first training establishes unarmed foundations and the art of shapeshifting. Kindreds then deepen the connection to individual beings, developing both the form itself and the skills associated with living and fighting in it. General knowledge and form knowledge work together, so a collection of shallow transformations is a different ambition from close study of a particular kindred. Later mastery belongs to the demanding path described in Walmor’s glade. Along the way, learn the restrictions and uses of form-specific spells, and explore pack tactics when another Gaesati can share your form. Progress is the growing ability to act purposefully inside a different body.
