Enchant gem wakes the power that sleeps in a cut stone, so that the armour or jewellery it is set in carries that power for whoever wears it.
It takes a single stone, and only one: a stone that a cutter has marked, cut fairly or better, set by a smith into armour or jewellery forged by known techniques. Some kinds of stone hold nothing that can be woken, and a stone will not wake a power the piece already carries from a shard or anything else. The piece must lie on the floor before you, in a province cutting room with a working grinder.
The finer the stone and the better its cut, and the further you have risen among the Gemcutters, the stronger the power that wakes. The cut counts most of all. A rare kind of stone gives up its power less readily than a common one: it needs a finer stone and a cleaner cut to wake as strongly, so a costly stone is seldom the best one to wake. A stone that is too plain, or a cutter not yet practised enough, wakes nothing at all, and the spell will not begin.
Before the casting begins you are told what will wake, the guild's due in silver and which shard will be spent. The working spends one shard of crystallized magic, and it takes the weakest one you carry that is strong enough for the waking; a shard of crystallized skill essence or spell essence will not serve. A shard you keep is never spent, and a shard in a pouch is as good as one loose in your pack. Once the casting lands, the due and the shard are gone whatever happens.
If the working fails, the stone shatters, and the shard and the fee are lost with it. The piece itself is never harmed, but it gets one waking only: once a stone has been woken or shattered in it, no new stone will hold in it at all, woken or plain.
A body can bear only a few woken stones at once, and never two that hold the same power, though stones of light are free of that limit. Any more lie dark while worn, the weakest first, and say so when you look at them.
