Gather herbs, mushrooms, fuel, and construction materials.
Usage: gather here - gather herbs and mushrooms outdoors
gather stones - collect sling stones into ammo pouch
gather firewood - gather firewood for campfire
gather scrub - gather burnable scrub outside forests
gather wood - gather timber (province, forest)
gather stone - break stone into blocks (province, rocky)
gather clay - dig clay (province, marsh or water's edge)
Herbs and mushrooms:
Plant lore and knowledge of mushrooms improve yield.
Certain guild mutations give additional bonuses.
Province materials:
Standing: requires Newcomer standing or higher in the
province. Earn it by killing territory monsters or by
completing province missions — council membership is
not required. Past that gate the labour itself earns
standing too, up to a daily limit shared across all
province labour.
Tools: axe for wood, pick for stone, none for clay.
Wood and stone need their tool — wielded, or carried
loose in your pack, but not inside a container. Better
tool quality improves yield.
Wood and clay go straight to the settlement stores. Stone
comes away as blocks you carry, the overflow at your feet:
take them to the storehouse yard, where 'deposit block'
pays for each one and 'deposit all block' hands over the
whole armful at once. Blocks left on the ground can be
gathered into one load with 'stack all block', loaded onto
a wagon with 'wagon load all stone', and tipped into the
yard's stock with 'wagon deposit stone'.
Sorting rubble at the mine entrance ('sort rubble')
puts the ore in the mine's bins, the coal into the
province's fuel pool and the stone onto the pile at the
mine mouth, from where it hauls to the yard like any
other stone. Sorting earns no standing by itself, but
the job board posts a sorting contract that does.
Skills that improve yield:
Wood: felling, axe work, hewing, knowledge of wood,
sawing, knowledge of trees
Stone: mining, masonry, geology, knowledge of minerals
Clay: surveyed rich clay tiles yield more; the clay
pit building extracts much more per session.
Trained artisans gather significantly more material per
session than unskilled workers. You can improve relevant
skills through the work itself.
Firewood and scrub:
Campfires burn firewood. Forest, hills, meadow, tundra and
swamp carry enough woody growth for it; open ground such as
plains, glacier and badlands yields only scrub (half yield,
half burn time). Scrub can be gathered anywhere but a forest.
Higher camping skill gives better yield. The firewood pile
is shared — anyone can contribute.
Examples:
gather here - search for herbs and mushrooms nearby
gather firewood - snap dead branches for the campfire
gather wood - chop timber for the settlement stores
gather stone - break blocks to carry to the storehouse
