Settings

Use help <command> for full syntax. You can change these settings as you learn; you do not need to configure everything before playing.

Make the display comfortable

• colour on enables colours. Use lite to change individual colours.
• term shows or changes your terminal settings. Read help term before overriding automatic detection.
• brief switches between short and full room descriptions. Full descriptions are useful while learning an area.
• help prompt explains the codes used by set prompt <format>.
• help screenreader explains the in-game screen-reader mode.

The browser client also has its own display settings. See accessibility help for available options.

Check your combat setup

• battle shows combat points and other battle settings.
• battle help assign explains the attack, defence and casting split.
• wimpy shows your automatic retreat limit. New characters start with this on; wimpy high tries to break off sooner and wimpy off disables it.
• mon on enables health updates. mon party controls reports to your party.

Read Combat before changing the point split. A spellcaster needs casting points during a fight.

Use shortcuts and protect items

alias -global lists built-in shortcuts. Use help alias to make your own and help nickname to shorten names. Use keep to protect equipment against accidental disposal.

The command set delim ; lets you separate commands with a semicolon. For example, north;look moves north and looks around. Read help set for other settings.

Talk and ask for help

channel list shows available channels. Type newbie <your question> for help, or tell <player> <message> to speak to one person. The general chat channel is ice.

Use friends to keep track of players and ignore to block unwanted messages. Report harassment to the wizards.
