newbie <your question>to ask players for help. - Use
help <command>for syntax andtopicsfor the help index.
In help text, <name> means to supply a name, square brackets mean an optional part, and a vertical bar means a choice. Do not type those markers themselves.
Read the world
Use look and examine the things a description mentions. Try greet <name>, then ask <name> about <topic>. Some people also offer talk to <name> with a lettered menu; follow the choices shown.
While a conversation menu is open, a command that is not a menu choice may only close the menu. Read the response and enter your intended command again if needed.
Travel and return safely
Use map and map landmarks in town and the atlas for longer trips. On roads, walk or capitalised directions can travel faster; read help walk first.
Off-road travel costs endurance. Night brings dangerous undead, so plan shorter daylight trips while learning. Newbie areas points out hazards near the early routes.
Use leave game and read the reply before closing your client. See Save and leave for inn saving and newcomer shelter. Disconnecting does not drop your equipment; emergency_quit does.
Check before fighting
New characters already have combat points and an automatic retreat setting. Check them with battle and wimpy. When you change roles or learn spells, check the point split again.
Use consider <monster>, keep an escape route and recover between fights. shape shows the enemy's condition and mon on reports health changes. Read Combat for the details.
Keep useful things
Use keep to guard equipment against accidental disposal. Check unfamiliar loot before selling it, especially shards and charms. Moneymaking tips explains where to start earning without relying on old market prices.
A light source, food and drink are worth checking before every trip. Until level 4 you see in the dark anyway; after that, light a torch or drink a vial of nightsight, which lets you see in the dark for about an hour. New characters carry two, and Ereldon sells more with buy vial. If your race sees poorly in daylight, read its race help before buying ordinary torches.
